Ideas for a possible college project

Basically next year in college we are meant to do a major project. Lecturers will give ideas for projects, but ultimately we can come up with stuff ourselves.

Generally they frown upon web stuff. Well I get that vibe anyway.

And that is just because they are in middle ages when it comes to web dev (i'm not joking, in last lecture lecturer was showing us how to align forms with tables).

But when it comes to computer science, my passion is definetely in web. So I would really like to try make something really cool. Firstly because when I get out of college I wanna work in web industry, so this project could be counted as experience (provided it's good). And just maybe these people will be able to see how cool of things you can do with it.

But.. I am stuck for ideas. I need something that could potentially be usefull, and it should be something quite complex (we can start working on it during summer, and all next year, so no shopping carts :P). Maybe something real time with meteor? Wanna try something really cutting edge :)

So... anyone any suggestions?

We'd be open to discussing bringing you on as an intern to help with a major overhaul of our app. App is rails but there'd also be some PHP and javascript as well. One idea: you could be responsible for executing portions of our roadmap - by the end of the project your contributions would be very substantial and give you great experience plus an actual portfolio piece to showcase to potential employers. Plus our app already has a nice user base so it's not like you'd be working on something with no users. Let me know if you're interested and want to chat more - zach (at) teammash (dot) com.
