The only thing I would recommend since you are working with the Adobe Suite, would be to get a solid state hard drive. It makes a big difference in comparison to a regular hard drive. I can tell you by experience because I use Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Media Encoder and all of them run extraordinaly well with a solid state.

If you are doing web development and/or Apple Development, that iMac is great!

I just know that i can spend 2k :D but well, i was thinking about i7 , 16GB ram and 1TB of fusion then the rest of it how its it s . I dont know really anything about mac , but yes , i want to do webdeveloping now and later one like in maybe a year two apps . Plus i will use photoshop and depends what i can affort then that stuff .

Hi, you should get the top mac model (27" 3.4 i7), upgrade the ram to 16gb, upgrade the hard drive to the 256gb Solid State. That takes you to £1919, then throw in the trackpad AND magic mouse, that takes you to £1978. That will last you YEARS.

Whats the difference between 256gb Solid State and 1TB fusion?

256gb Solid State is entirely made up from flash storage which is the faster drive, but you sacrifice storage space for speed. The fusion drive on the other hand is a hybrid between a solid state drive and a traditional hard drive, it has both a 128gb sold state drive and a 1tb traditional drive. It then uses clever software and caching to keep recently used files etc on the faster part of the drive, and keep other stuff that is used less frequently on the 1tb slower side of the drive.

I personally always go for the pure solid state drives because its faster and then in the future if I need more space just buy an external drive. However the 1tb fusion drive is a good compromise.

In the end its down to your preference.

I should add, for 99% of people 256gb solid sate drive is gonna be MORE than enough, especially just for web developing and general coding. If you were a video editor or something i would recommend the fusion drive instead.

I guess i need fusion drive maybe? i will do alot of adobe things like photoshop etc.. later one in like a year two i will move into app developement. Video uhh not sure about that , not sure how app graphics exactly works

Again its all down to preference. I personally would go for the solid state drive, at 256gb you will be able to store TONES of stuff on there. And if you find yourself running out in the future you can just add on an external drive. But to be honest you will only run out if you end up keeping all of your past and present projects on there, and do you really need to keep a 2 year old project for example on your imac and sacrifice overall speed? Or would it be better to keep all those old projects on an external drive (still within a few clicks reach)? and give yourself a faster experience on your imac.

hmmm well , yes im on PC and i ran out of space but i have like qite alot of webprojects and images copied over and over again : p etc..

So i should buy a mac 27 inch, i7 3.4, 256gb solid state drive and 16GB of memory only this right?

256GB drive can store (roughly)

  • 25,600 10mb photos.
  • 2560 100mb web or app projects (never gonna happen)

Yep. Thats what id do 100%

If you HAVE to spend £2k that is. Is this your money or is your company paying?

Well, its mine money and the limit is 2k , after that i cant spend really anything else and i gonna need to use photoshop on college remote and then later one when i get some money i gonna need to buy photoshop and ilustrator and i hope thats it becuase their exensie too.

Oh my bad, I thought the top model was an i7 as default.

OK so Ive reworked it to make it less than £2k. Upgrade to the i7, keep the ram at 8gb and go for the 256gb SSD.

BTW photoshop and illustrator etc are all included in the adobe creative cloud subscription (so no huge upfront cost). Its £46 a month, and you get access to 15+ softwares. Or you can get access to just one software like photoshop for £17.58 a month. All the details are here http://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud.html

Okay ill do that :)

Yes but you know 46pound per month is quite alot , with it in time i coud buy adobe master colection and get all the adobe for ever : p ill just gonna make a website that earn 100pound per day so i can afford equipment : p

But is there a lot of difference between 8gb and 16gb ? i dont want it to run out if you know what i mean , my mum uses this pc too and shes learning wordpress so i will do other stuff too and well im not sure . But as you think 8gb is enough?

Yeah 8gb will be fine, i run things like photoshop, adobe premiere etc on my macbook air which has only 4gb of ram.

Are you a student out of interest? Cause if you are you can get an apple education discount, plus a discount with adobe as well.

Im a student at college in UK . Bt thb teaching in college is **** really. I could just live it and learn from treehouse because everything i want to learn is here :/ but at least i did found graphic course there and thats useful but i ony have like 8h per week -_- . I need mac for work , to learn nothing else , just learn everything that is related with technology such as iOS , Web , photoshop etc...

Your sorted then! Do you have an NUS card or anything? As a student you can get the imac i recommend above as a student for £1714.80 instead of £1949.

o that would be great 200 pound is alot . I know i have just college card thats it . I get 150 pound every 3 months as benefits wich 120 goes on bus for 3 months so yeah ... but maybe some of that paper is valid? ill tell my mum today maybe she will know better about this .

You can even max it out and get the full i7, 256gb ssd and 16gb ram and still be way under budget at £1855.

See if your institution is on the list here:

If it is you can get the full education discount, if its not you can still get a discount as a student (just not as much of a discount) by going the following address:
