Images Slowing Down Performance

I made a website for my friend. She's an artist and has a lot of images that take up ALOT of space. I've tried compression tools, but the images are still too large and there are too many of them.

How do I deal with this problem?

What kind of compression tools are you using? Also what format are you saving the photos in? If you save as a jpg format at 60% quality that should keep the image clear enough for screens and keep the size down for fast loading.
