In Ajax what is the difference between initializing a new request object and initializing a request?

For example

var xhr= new XMLHttpRequest();

//and 

xhr.open();

I'm having trouble understanding what .open does mdn says it initializes a request but I would assume initializing an new request object initialize a request, I'm a bit confused.
