I was using arrow function notation, which breaks this functionality. I switched to function() notation and it works now! Yay for ES6 training elsewhere!

I just ran into the same problem, I guess the arrow function allows it to bind to the Question Schema Constructor, instead of the object itself, same goes for the AnswerSchema methods! your post helped me out thanks
