initialize a member variable nexterminate using findviewbyid method

dont forget to cast the generic

MainActivity.java 
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;

public class MainActivity extends Activity {

    protected Button mExterminateButton;

   mExterminateButton = (Button).findViewById(R.Id.button1);
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

        // Declare our view variables

    }

}

Hi

You should assign your variable inside your onCreate() method after you have called setContentView() and you added an extra full stop (period) by mistake after the casting to a button which is removed in the code below.

import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;

public class MainActivity extends Activity {

    protected Button mExterminateButton;


    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

        // Declare our view variables
        mExterminateButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button1);
    }

}
