Inline-block white-space unnoticed in Chrome Developer Tools?

Why does Chrome Developer tools not show the extra white-space created by inline-block elements?

Also, do all inline-block elements always have extra white-space before and after the element?

Browsers interpret white space between inline elements in the same way they do white space between words and it's not specifically highlighted in Developer Tools since it's not a margin or padding. This can definitely be a pain to deal with when using inline-block to build layouts rather than floats. Here are a couple resources that might help:
