Instantiating Objects VS Using Static Methods

I have done a bit of java prior to this android course and my initial instinct when abstracting the FactBook class was to make all of the methods static and avoid any overhead of object instantiation. Is there an advantage to instantiating an object and calling its methods or a reason that Ben has chosen to do it the way he has?
