IOS ipad and iphone scaling help

Hi, im new to app design.

I am wondering how to make universal apps for both the iphone 5/6 and ipad, but only using one story board. I have come into problems when implementing one design on the ipad, and then recompiling on the iphone, only to see that what i have implemented doesnt fit.

Apple made it possible to create totally adaptable apps in iOS 8 using size classes. They are kind of like screen breakpoints in CSS, but much more specific to Apple screen sizes. This video from WWDC 2014 is extremely helpful: https://developer.apple.com/videos/wwdc/2014/#216.
