Is he confusing express middleware and mongoose middleware?

Around the 2 min mark, he's discussing the 'next' param in the context of a mongoose hook, but then something about express working out which piece of middleware is called subsequently. Unless I'm mistaken (and, to be candid, it's happened once or twice before), it sounds like mongoose calls the subsequent piece of middleware in that context. To me, it sounds like express and mongoose have separate middleware concepts and it sounds like he's conflating the two. Am I mistaken? I'd appreciate any insight anyone can provide. Ta.
