Is it better to store thumbnail images locally?

I have thumbnail images which I have obtained from vimeo and youtube however at the moment I am just linking to them using their url's is it better practice for me to download them and store them locally in my image folder?

My favorite two reasons for serving images from your own site vs. another are:

  1. It is good etiquette to not have another web server do the work of serving up images to your visitors.
  2. If you serve images from your own server you never have to worry about the URL changing or other issues that could cause broken links.

For extra bonus points, use a lossless (aka no harm done) image compressor like ImageOptim to make sure the images you are serving download as fast as possible.

Thank you for the answer very informative. I can't seem to select this as best answer for some reason. But this is!
