Is it necessary for this course that I must start my own web server?

The teachers notes have me using my terminal, dont know what the terminal is or does. Feels out of my field, or frame of reference. Is there a course that I can take on Treehouse that will better acquaint me with it? Can I skip it for now and continue with html or is it necessary for me to continue with this current course?

Yes you can definitely skip it if you don't feel comfortable continuing with it. There is nothing wrong with that.

I would recommend the 'Front End Web Development' track or 'Learn HTML' track.
