Is it possible to change a css background attribute with a javascript variable?

So I have a tab that has a background which will constantly change, and the image path is stored as a string in a javascript variable. Is it possible to put this variable into some code like this:

document.getElementById(id).style.background="variable here"

the variable would store a string like this "../folder/img.jpg"

Maybe try something like this:

var bgImg = "../folder/img.jpg";
document.getElementById(id).style.backgroundImage = "url("+ bgImg +")";
