PHP

Is it possible to run php files on treehouse workspaces now?

I'm in the process of learning php, and I can not use sublime text 2 because I would have to pay for it. Are there any ways around this, like other editors that are free and run php? Does the treehouse version work?

Sublime Text is free to evaluate, and there is currently no enforced evaluation time, meaning you can use it indefinitely. For learning purposes, I'd say use the evaluation version (no different than the paid), and if you want to start making money with your coding, or you've become proficient, buy a copy to support the authors.

Text editors don't actually run the code, only edit it and highlight with the correct syntax (assuming it's a decent text editor). So you still need to have a local server to actually run the php. XAMPP, MAMP or something similar, there are plenty of videos showing you how to install them.

As far as alternative to Sublime Text (although I do love it). Try Notepad++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ (windows only). Or Brackets http://brackets.io/

Yeah thanks for the recommendation of brackets. I just downloaded it and it seems better than any free text editor I have seen so far.

It's important to note that Treehouse's Workspaces is not a text editor it's a full dev environment, it's an editor, file manager and local server all in one hosted in the cloud.
