Is my logic flawed here or? Because this is super frustrating.

So do I need to wrap this in a try catch block or? Because the current compiler error is it doesn't like the word IllegalArgumentException. It says it's an invalid symbol?

First, you misspelled Exception, leaving the i off, which is causing the invalid symbol error. Second, you are throwing the exception when the field name is OK, but returning it when it's not which is the exact opposite of what you need to do here.
