is the idea of MVP the same as the method known as the scrum method??

Not really, but they're related. Scrum is essentially a "flavor" of the agile methodology, the other popular flavor being Kanban. MVP is a term that exists under the umbrella of agile, an MVP is a stage in the application building process, while scrum is a way to organize the work process. You might use scrum to build an MVP, but you could also use another method. An MVP is just a step above a proof of concept in terms of functionality and complexity.

Not really, MVP is used quite often in startups to determine the absolutely minimum product they can release to start either making money, or at least getting customer feedback.
