Is there a good guide to setup iPython?

I've been trying to setup iPython but it's not obvious to the novice user - even though it looks ideal to use for a beginner.

I did the first couple of steps here (I already have python 3.4 setup from the python track) http://ipython.org/install.html

ie

pip install ipython

pip install "ipython[notebook]"

However after downloading I get a .whl file which if I search how to install i get contridictary instructions of using "sudo easy_install ipython" and other recommendations never to use sudo to install (I'm new to mac so not that familiar with sudo).

What's the best way to setup so I can use notebooks and python (ideally just like computable on the iPad).

The docs you cited are pretty good. You really shouldn't need to do anything else other than pip install ipython. Can you confirm you have pip or setuptools installed by typing in 'pip list'? Maybe list any error messages as well.

Also, imo, ipyhton is way way better than the regular interactive shell. So, it is worth figuring out.

I 'installed' ipython via pip3 which I can run via typing 'python' in the terminal. How do I run a notebook though?

Note as an aside does pip3 install to the python 3 installation and pip to python 2 installation by default? (python 3 installation came with pip3 one of the courses covered this), but how should pip be installed as it doesn't seem to come included with python 2)?
