Is there a resource that explains how to write a proper spec for an application?

I am working on writing out a full spec for an application and was wondering if there was some resource that explains best practices and how it should look like. A simple google search didn't really help so I thought I'd ask here.

When working on a new feature, and something that helps if you are doing TDD(writing tests in general) is to write user stories. Given a certain user and a task they want to complete, what actions are taken, pages shown, states of that page etc.
