Is there any way to disable notifications?

I'm talking about the red bubble with numbers that appears over the menu icon and in the bookmark bar.

Most of the time they just let me know about a new course that (1) I'm either going to take anyway or (2) I don't really care about.

When you click on the notifications, it takes you to the notifications page but doesn't clear the notifications. If I chose to "see all" of the notifications, I really don't think I should have to click on every single one before the notification bubble goes away, that's just tedious.

AMEN!!! It especially bugs me in the Chrome tab.
