is there anyway to do just a good 'ol perl compatible regex??? I think it is complicating a supposedly simple task.

The Python "re" module will work for you.

Thanks for answering Cole. I found that Pythons re module is much more legible despite it's quirkiness. Plus, we can convert the result to a dict in a one function. That's neat.
