Is xampp needed to run localhost on mysql workbench?

Hello. I'm in the database class and I download mysql and got it running and then downloaded mysql workbench but it wouldn't connect to localhost like in the videos. I then downloaded xampp (heard about it online) and connected it. Now the mysql workbench works. Why is that? Is xampp necessary?

On a related note, if I have mysql installed, will I have to uninstall it to use xampp (since it has it's own mysql)? I uninstalled mysql just in case. Thanks.

Yes, xampp has sql database.

Workbench is GUI interface to connect to mysql. It's either that or you use phpmyadmin. So it's really up to you. As long you connect to sql database.

Thanks
