I've spent hours and hours in treehouse...and more off it creating my first website..

nothing seems to look at how i envisioned and everything i seem to do looks like crap...not sure if this is normal or if I just suck that bad....

I will suggest you to find design elements from other websites and combine them together. The way I was practicing, I was choosing a nice website and I was trying to make and exact copy of it with my own HTML and Css. It's a great way to practice, because at the beginning you have no idea and imagination how to design.

I don't do this to purely criticize but I must say it. The way Guil and the way Nick coded their sample sites was different...which has lead to some confusion as far as layout, structure and just the best way to do things...i just feel lost most times, and refer back to both websites often...to figure out the logic...I have looked at many websites and honestly just don't see how they did a lot of these things...currently tackling Javascript while working on my site on the side...

Stop beating yourself up. Everyone starts from somewhere. Take it baby steps.

Thanks...

First step at being good at something is to suck at something. You've spent only mere hours doing this. The quality of sites you're use to seeing are almost always done by teams with years of experience each. Which probably adds up to thousands of years of combined experience and work. Keep at it. Things will get better.

"First step at being good at something is to suck at something." So true!

It's so elegantly put, isn't it? haha! I heard that somewhere, and it stuck, because we all suck at something new we start. It really is the human evolution. Very few of us are naturally skilled in very few things. The huge majority of us...well...suck at the start.

Thanks for the perspective...

Often we also judge ourselves pretty harshly, so you may think your design doesn't look that great when in fact most people would disagree. Even if your site didn't turn out as intended don't worry its normal! It takes a long to really become good at something. Looking back on my early websites(even after plenty of treehouse) they don't look as good as what I can create now.

Just keep learning and you'll get much happier with your results :)

I am a perfectionist by nature...so its driving me nuts in many aspects...I just want to be a good programmer...

It happens to all of us when we first start trying to make our own website. Mine looks nothing like how I want it to look right now either, but it'll get better the more and more we learn. Keep at it, you've got this! :)

I'm sure your right Malerie...its just tough when it feels like everything I'm doing looks like a text file..

Ask around the people you already know. Chances are good someone knows someone who is a professional developer and won't mind helping you with specific issues. Mentors are lifesavers.
