Java Help

I am going through the Android for Beginners class. I have some very basic experience programming. However i keep getting totally lost on the java. I am taking this class as i want to learn how to do some basic home automation control with an app using something like a spark core. I have watched the videos a couple of times and i am still lost. I can follow along and do what is being taught but i really dont understand what it is that i am doing and more importantly how i will utilize it in my end goal. Help!!!
