Javascript is difficult

Around 8 minutes when Jim starts the "debug" function the script is nearly impossible to follow. I need to learn Ruby and this video is frustrating.

Have you tried codecademy.com... It might help to start there, with their javascript course, before moving onto treehouse. It's worth checking out and it's totally free.
