It looks like you just had some misplaced braces:

public class Game {
        private String mAnswer;
        private String mHits;
        private String mMisses;

        public Game(String answer) {
                mAnswer = answer;
                mHits = "";
                mMisses = "";
        }

 // removed } from here because this would close your class. 
public boolean applyGuess(char letter) {
        boolean isHit = mAnswer.indexOf(letter) >= 0;

        if (isHit) {
                mHits += letter;
        }
        else {
                mMisses += letter;
        }
        return isHit;
 }
} //added } here to close the class

What is weird is that I had this very same error. I had to quit from java-repl and reload everything and it worked! I did not change anything in my code. A bug in repl ?
