Jekyll Sub directories are showing mysiteurl.com/portfolio/index.html on my live site. How can I remove the index.html

Jekyll Sub directories are showing my urls as "mysiteurl.com/portfolio/index.html" on my live site. How can I remove the index.html at the end so it is just "mysiteurl.com/portfolio/" or "mysiteurl.com/portfolio" . Jekyll says in automatically removes the index.html in sub folders but is that only if you use git hub?
