Job Interview Advice and Discussion

I have been working really hard on treehouse and a couple of days ago I sorted out my resume and cover letter and emailed a local company about their front end web developer position. They sent me some coding tests which I completed and sent back to them and now they have scheduled an interview. I have never applied or been interviewed for a job before and am a little bit nervous. The company said that their job interviews are very informal. Any input or views on this are greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Stan.

Hi Stan, first of all congratulations & wish you the best. Secondly i envy you cause I've been one year on treehouse and haven't got anything from this back apart from the knowledge lol :D

Well It is something way beyond our control actually so I would just give a boring advice, just be yourself. Rather than saying you can do this and do that, say you would look at any problems and try to solve them with your knowledge. So instead of showing off what you can do, be down to earth but show them you are know very well what you are talking about, and most important, show that you love what you do.

They're right mostly interviews for 'us' are informal so again just take it easy and be yourself.

Good luck!

I just checked out your website, it is absolutely stunning. Your skills in flat ui design are amazing. Can't believe you aren't already working for a top web company because you certainly could be!

Hi Stan,

My company offered me some interviewer training so I have a little bit of insight into what is potentially the process. One piece of advice I could give you would be that when the interviewer asks a situational question like "Tell me about a time when you had to do (insert situation here)," They are looking for a three-part answer. Part 1 is telling them about the situation. Part 2 is how you reacted to the situation. Part 3 is the resolution of the situation.

An example would be "Tell me about a time you worked with a difficult client." and a good answer would be along the lines of "I was working on a project where the client had been given incorrect expectations and the client was frustrated and angry. I took it upon myself to reach out to the client and work with them on some alternative solutions to the problem all while showing empathy for the situation and assuring my commitment to the success of the project. In the end, we decided on a good alternative solution and we were able to successfully complete the project."

Hi Stan Thank you that really helps my confidence. Probably because I'm too old lol! Congrats Stan! Enjoy your new job and remember, love what you do and you'll do it well. Whatever it is.

Regards Ben

Hi Stan, I think most of your questions have answers in the Career Foundations course. It looks like you've already completed that course, but I would maybe review it for a refresher before the interview. Congratulations by the way!
