jQuery won't be able to directly make queries of a database, you'll need another layer in between such as a rails or PHP application which can provide a AJAX endpoint from which jQuery can pull data. Once you have something set up on a server side to provide a JSON or XML representation of what you're pulling out of the database you'd want to look into jQuery.ajax for how to access it.
