General Discussion

Just curious as to why W3schools is never mentioned. Is it copyright issues? They're not the best resource?

I was just wondering about the reason why W3Schools is never mentioned in learning resources for videos. No major issue, just curious. Is it a copyright issue? Are the other resources better resources? Etc, etc.

They're generally not considered reliable by the a majority of the community. They have great SEO, so they come up almost always first in the search results, but there has been issues where they use techniques that are not best practices, outdated, or some other issue, and the problem this has caused is more vocal and experienced devs are frustrated they're teaching bad habits.

I'm not vocal about it, but there are too many other great resources I tend to not grace their pages.

A site was constructed to bring attention to the inconsistencies. You can read what they have to say: http://www.w3fools.com/

Today, the Mozilla Developer Network is top notch and open source, so it gets updated frequently. I'm also a huge fan of CSS-Tricks.

Wow. Thank you for this. I've noticed the MDN mentioned primarily, so I assumed it was one of the best resources. I'm so glad I joined Treehouse. I was self-teaching through W3 and would have never known I was learning bad practices. Definitely thankful for the quality here.

No problem. I think W3Schools have cleaned up a lot of the crap they were getting from developers, but they still have a damage reputation among many. It is what it is.
