Learn how to deploy Django sites without Heroku or PythonAnywhere?

Is it possible to learn/play around with deploying a Django site on VirtualBox VM? I've seen the videos with Kenneth Love on deploying with Heroku and PythonAnywhere. That is great, but I would like learn how to deploy without a paid service like. Maybe a future clients already have a server or VPS. And I'm still really confused about how to deal with media files in production. So I need a playground.

Has anyone done this? Is there a tutorial or YouTube video?

Or is there a better approach? How do you guys deploy?
