Android Android Lists and Adapters (2015) Custom ListViews getView() and the ViewHolder Pattern

Link between custom list and activity

So, we have in one hand our custom list view with all the items populated by the adapter, and in the other hand the activity with the list view... But I don't understand where is the relation between both, I mean how do we know that our custom list will populate the list view?
