Looking for HTML5 and CSS codes I can edit to practice with

Hello I am looking for complete codes using HTML 5 and CSS that I can edit and play around with to get a better understanding to how they work. I was told about the website http://html5up.net/ which has a lot of great ones but I am having trouble finding how to open them once downloaded. I thought the HTML 5 doc always starts with <!DOCTYPE html> and then the rest of the code follows but I cannot see this in any of the files I have downloaded. Please can someone explain to me with these free online codes available how I can open and edit them. Thanks in advance John

You should check your browser preferences to see where the files are downloaded.

I tried one out from http://html5up.net/ It downloads a folder with a bunch of files.

If you open index.html in your browser (probably the default option) you can see what the web page will look like.

If you want to edit the files you will need to override the default option of whatever application opens the html files and open them with the text editor of your choice.

Thanks for your help, I just figured it out now. I was left clicking on the index folder instead of right clicking it and selecting edit in notepad++. Thanks for your help. Kind regards John
