General Discussion

Looking for some feedback on first website.

Hey,

I've recently decided to stop moping about, and just do it. So I deployed my first website. It's a personal/portfolio/project-platform kind of thing, and I'd really appreciate any feedback I can get on it. Thanks (:

Actually not bad, only one issue I immediately noticed.

Text.

I like your headline text, that's fine. But your body text is hard to read, so I didn't. I think it's two small, it's two fine, and you don't really have is organized in a hierarchy , so it sorta becomes this wall of text and I immediately want to skip reading any of it.

The only thing that really helps with the hierarchy is the block quote but even it doesn't stand out in location or style.

I think you can address those issues on the home page you'll have a pretty good site on your first go around.

Yup, I was worried about that :D, haven't quite figure out how to move it around/shorten it, but it's on the top of my to-do list.

You don't even really have to shorten the amount of words, just re-style and redefine what is there. I love how clean a sans serif font is, and for headlines and single lines of text, I mostly use sans-serif's unless the design needs a serif font. For paragraph text I tend to default to a serif font, but not always.

Otherwise, great job at it. I do like the squiggly headline text and your color choices!

Will definitely take into account! Thank you (:

You're welcome. One of the best "first websites" I've seen!

I like it. Very clean and uncluttered with stuff you do not need. The picture on your contact page might be well suited on your home page. The homepage image small. I like your choice of text and background. I am by no means an expert so these are just thoughts from a new student of TreeHouse.

Clean and simple. Nice work!

Nice website. Fun to read though the content and descriptions you have and a great resume. I will use sticky footer to keep the it on the bottom of pages, use a different font for the headings. I feel the font is too comic looking at the soberness of the site (except your contact page image)J .

Had a great time reading your content, and it looks nice too. :)

I'm curious, what is Black Risotto? Sounds interesting, I love normal risotto.

Black risotto is a dish I've had many times in Croatia. It's basically risotto with squid ink, and pieces of squid. It makes your teeth black, and it's really messy, so I wouldn't advise eating it on a date, but it's so delicious :D

Here's a visual: http://i945.photobucket.com/albums/ad299/verunika_album/P1010531-2.jpg (keep in mind: don't judge a book by its covers)

Wow it really is black :D Gonna have to try that sometime. Very interesting.

Nice website, and good work with bootstrap. I also really liked spasticBackground. What did you do to achieve the color change?

I used jQuery's Events. Basically I wanted to find a way to change the color based on the x and y coordinates of the cursor position regarding to the screen.

Here's the documentation I used to help me: http://api.jquery.com/event.pageX/

Then I figured I should somehow map a value I get from the coordinates into a hex value. So I used a toString(16) method to convert the numbers from decimals to hexadecimals.

Cool but the text isn't the clearest and there is a lot of it on the homepage. Perhaps break it down into it's own pages and then have big calls to action on the homepage which ultimately lead to the individual pages. It'll make the UX much nicer in my opinion as a user doesn't have to read everything to find what they want to know, you've already done that with categorising the homepage.

Thanks for the feedback (:, I'll definitely move most of the content from the homepage to an "about me" section. What exactly did you mean by "calls to action"?

Buttons/links basically. Have a little intro to the section/follow on page with a link to the full page. You can then put more imagery on the homepage.

Nice site. You may want to consider working on your site's typography i.e. font if you wanna make it look much better. It's your call. I actually bookmarked your resources page, I might find something worth looking into later.

Hmm, seems like the consensus is to change the type :D. Dang it, I really liked them both. Well, anyway, thanks for the feedback (: I'll consider all of your opinion!

I think it's great! I also think it's super inspiring! Great job! :)

I like it. The actual content is enjoyable to read. I get the impression that you are a sincere person--still a student--but going above and beyond the typical student is shown by the website itself.

I think the 180 sites thing is such a great idea.

I don't love the font pairings. The text can seem a little bit wall-of-text-like, but not too bad. Perhaps a little more blank space between paragraphs would help.

I love it mate, I just spend an hour reading it.

Your resources section is great! (my favorite part) I spend so much time on google looking for tutorials and other "teach-yourself-code-schools" that is nice to see it "all" in one place.

Spastic Background: that was brilliant. I played with it for .... way to long.

And I like the letters and the colors you chose, its nice and it looks clean.

Your link to code-school is not working I don't think. It took me to some "build web sites for phones" company. It didn't took me to codeschool.com (all the other links seem to be fine)

I'll bookmark your page mate, it has great stuff!

Cheers

PS: "My life is completely stalkable". Hilarious.

I've taken you guys's input into account, and I've restructured/redesigned my website some.

If anyone wants to take a look, and tell me their thoughts, that'd be awesome (:
