Making computer guess the random number question

When I do var guess = getRandomNumber(upper); instead of just doing var = guess;

the code doesn't work. Why is that?

CODE

var upper = 10000;
var comprandomNumber = getRandomNumber(upper);
var guess;
var attempts = 0;



function getRandomNumber(upper) {
    var randomNumber = Math.floor(Math.random() * upper) + 1;
    return randomNumber;
}

while(guess!== comprandomNumber) {
    guess = getRandomNumber(upper);
    attempts = attempts + 1;

}

This would not be proper syntax: "var = guess;", an equal-sign would never come after "var".

But "var guess = getRandomNumber(upper);" should work.
