Making it look right in IE

Hay guys,

I'm making an e-commerce website and I just got the basic layout done. Before I moved on to adding content I went to check how it looked in IE and Mozilla (I have been building it using Chrome). Mozilla looks okay, serviceable, but in IE it looks like crap.

I added a modernizr script but that still isn't doing the trick. Drop-down menu's aren't working, the side-bar navigation list is very buggy, and the overall layout doesn't look right.

What else can I do to try and make it look better? Should I make dumbed down css styles for lt IE 9 or something? How would I go about writing that code into my < head> (to check if it is lt IE9, etc.)

Please tell me if you need anymore info from me. Thank you!

First I'd recommend you check out CSS3 PIE to help with your CSS3 IE issues.

Then you can check out html5please for advice on which polyfills to use to smooth out any remaining cross-browser issues.

Remember, modernizr isn't magic, you have to link to each polyfill you want to use.

One easy thing that I think will make a big help is specifying a doctype:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
...

@Randy, thank you I have added that now.

@James, you are a information slinging wizard man. Those are some great resources I didn't know about before, I'm going to spend some good time with them to see if they can remedy my issues. I'll report back with how it went!

Thanks to both of you!
