Making the leap across the pond

Andrew Chalkley how did you start looking for great jobs in North America while in the UK?

Just looking for general advice on how you got going really as I think I'd like to do the same in the near future.

I was approached by Ryan Carson directly :) You'll also need a lawyer!

Basically do everything. Talk at meet ups, conferences, chair conferences, write, participate in the open source community, be friends with everyone, work hard.

Thanks Andrew, where did you begin when you were over here then? You're from England, right? Can you recommend a few specific places to begin or things I can look at down south? You need to understand that I'm a noob.

Living down South was extremely expensive when I first started out. I'd stay in the North and find a job there. Look for small marketing agencies.

I've written a couple of blog posts recently that cover starting out in your career:

Let me know if that helps?

Thanks Andrew, you are helping! I'll have a read at these and if there's ever anything else in the future I'll drop you a line. I think that's all for now!

P.S. Ryan Carson do you need a Scottish guy who's hungry to learn who's got a good business degree? :p

Hey Darren,

I'm afraid we're not hiring right now, unless you teach .NET :(

Sorry! Ryan
