map function

Please help me to understand the map function. I have tried from many different internet source but not getting a single bit. Please help

The "map" function takes each item from a list, runs another function on it, and then adds the result of that other function to a new list. When it's all done it returns the new list.

So in a sense, it converts any function that works on a single value into one that works on an entire list.
