Mask: Black to hide help

I click on my layer (with the layer masked thumbnail). I'm using the brush like she mentions in the video to tighten up the edges of my photo. "Black to hide" just brushes the layer with black paint. Is there a setting I need to make sure the brush touches/hides instead of paint?

Figured it out. You have to click on the actual layers mask thumbnail.
