Multi-Column Layout vs Grid System

So what's the difference between the multi column layout and a grid system like the ones used in bootstrap and foundation?

In my opinion the grid system gives you more flexibility. You may not want certain pictures or words to be in the column. With a grid system it is just easier to line things up exactly where you want them.
