new_item

What does new_item = (">") do. Please put in simple terms.

new_item = (">") # it saves it same as any character or string like -
new_item = '>' new_item ='TreeHouse'

The way i understood it was that (">") was used just to give "new_item" something to contain until it was actually given something from your code.
