No sound in Safari?

I seem to be experiencing a problem. I'm not hearing sound on the videos while in Safari. When I use Chrome, it works fine.

I do want to note that when I click the download link to download the video, I can hear the sound on those pages. It's just on the main tutorial pages that I can't hear video sound in Safari.

Anyone have a remedy or are experiencing the same problem?

There are several people with the same issue when it comes to youtube video. Seems like it might be the HTML5 video embedder that isnt fully supported with Safari. And when you click the download link - Safari uses an in-built video player to play the videos instead of using the embedded player that treehouse uses.

Youtube has the alternative to switch to flash player. I dont know if treehouse has the same feature!

You can check if thats the case on this page: http://videojs.com/ Select the player (HTML5, Flash e.e) around the border. and see if its the HTML5 that doesnt work or something.

It does work on my Safari browser, so you could try updating! Altough is really crappy so i do recommend something like Google Chrome.

@Jonathan -

There's a conflict between how Treehouse uses HTML5 video & Perian

You've got a few options on how to workaround this issue:

@Christer Nordbø - You and James were right! The problem was the HTML5 videos.

@James Barnett - Thanks for the link to switch to Flash!

@Jonathan - You're quite welcome.

Let us know in the forum if/when you have more questions.

I deleted Perian and DivX. I then went into /Library/QuickTime and deleted the divX codecs. Works with HTML5 now with no issues.

Thanks for troubleshooting this, I'll have to remember that bit about the divX codecs.

Where'd you find /Library/Quicktime – I'm on Mountain Lion if that helps any.

Hi Daniel;

Open Finder (the file manager) in Devices click on your iMac Click on the your Hardrive (Macintosh HD) Open the Library File. Open the Quicktime File Drag any Perian or DivX codecs (the word codec will appear in the file name) to the trash.

Hope this helps.

Brian

Ok, I found that! I'm not retarded or anything, I just wanted to double check and make sure this is right. Cos I uninstalled Perian from Preferences and this is what's in my Quicktime Folder Quicktime Folder

I needed to remove the DivX codecs as well.

I've been having the same issue. I didn't realise Perian interfered with it as I prefer HTML5 over flash.

The problem with Flash for me is that when I am running dual screen monitors and I want a full screen my iMac renders one monitor useless. This will be fixed in Mavericks ( the next OSX).

However some sites use DivX codecs like WordPress so it is always a give and take.

There are always work -arounds.

Yeah mine just wasn't working. So I got rid of Perian, cos I don't really use anything apart from MP4 or MP3 anyways, cos I use an Android phone which supports both and our house uses 3 apple TV's so it's not a huuge deal I don't think.
