Not drawing over paths created when applying a brush

At the end of this video Mat is coloring in the image with the brush we created without drawing on the paths we created. When i tried to do this my brush strokes would fall on top of my paths. How do i replicate this?

It might be that you have to unlock the color layer, can you see if that works?

What? How do you do this? Unlock the color layer? I'm trying to figure this out.
