I am shooting from the hip here-- this may or may not be what you were looking for.

Your class method appears to require a little help. You needed the parameter "pattern", and in the method the "self" parameter is "cls" so you need to reference the object with it.

    @classmethod
    def from_string(cls, pattern=""):
        cls.pattern = pattern
        return cls
