not understanding what they me asking me to do

Im a little confuse about the question?

The question is -"The code below sets an EditText variable from the layout of an Activity. Set the petName variable to the value from this EditText".

What you should do is assign the data from the EditText variable to a String. We do this by calling two methods. getText(), which returns a Editable and toString(), which coverts the Editable an returns a string . You final expression should look like:

EditText petNameField = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.petNameField);
String petName = petNameField .getText().toString();
