Notify users that an update is available for your app (Google Play)

Hey guys!

I just finished watching the "Publishing an app" course and I've done everything that the tutor mentioned. I updated my code, rebuilt it, uploaded to google developer console.

The application had updated in google play store (I could tell as I changed the icon). However I didn't get notified that an update is required.

Is there anything I need to do to pop-up an alert to notify google play store a newer version of my app is available? Or does it just take a while for the Play Store to pick up an update is available?
