NSString *favorite = [color stringByAppendingString: preference];

My last line of code reads as written above and I am unable to detect an error in the code. The error says: make sure to assign the correct value to 'favorite'

You have the variables in the method mixed up. You want to append the string "purple" to the string "My favorite color is", so the method call should be:

NSString *favorite = [preference stringByAppendingString:color]  ;
