Order of CSS properties?

This question just pertains to writing clean CSS in general, so I won't provide any source code.

So I'm under the assumption that when writing CSS, it is common to define styles based on the order they appear in the mark-up... But how should the order of selectors be influenced by multiple selectors being grouped into one rule?

I'm more-less just looking for tips on how to stay organized while defining numerous CSS rules.
