Passing php variables using Jquery/Ajax

Hi there, doesnt someone have a ideia if there is any episode that talks about working with php and ajax/jquery. I have a page with a list of titlle messages, and when i click in the link it popups a model window where should show the message body, but the problem is i cant pass any information i href="#", because this way the model doesnt open, doesnt anybody no how i would achieve it?
