phpMyAdmin "No tables found in database"

phpMyAdmin will not populate any new databases with tables and as a result I cannot do any clean installs of WordPress. I'm using MAMP and Chrome and desperately need to get this working. Thank you for any help you may offer. I don't know why it isn't working as I used to be able to do the famous 5-minute install effortlessly.
