Python

Players Regex: nothing to repeat at position 2 (line 2, column 2)

Request: Create a variable named players that is an re.search() or re.match() to capture three groups: last_name, first_name, and score. It should include re.MULTILINE.

import re

string = '''Love, Kenneth: 20 Chalkley, Andrew: 25 McFarland, Dave: 10 Kesten, Joy: 22 Stewart Pinchback, Pinckney Benton: 18'''

players = re.search(r''' ^?P<last_name>\w+, ?P<first_name>\b\w+^: ?P<score>\d+\b $ ''', re.M)

Returns error: nothing to repeat at position 2 (line 2, column 2). Any tips?

Also, I have no idea how to include the actual code screen like I see in other questions. I presume it's through the "Get Help" button in the challenges but that button doesn't work for me.

:point_right: Your re.search needs a bit of work yet:

  • you forgot to enclose your named groups with parentheses
  • the character classes for the names will need to include spaces to handle the multiple-word names
  • you'll need the re.X flag to use the expanded format
  • you forgot the second argument ("string")

And code formatting info is found in the Markdown Cheatsheet pop-up below the answer area. :arrow_heading_down:
